During graduate school I had the good fortune to be placed in a group therapy class with a professor named Dr. Coven. As the leader of our group Dr. Coven repeatedly modeled behavior for us, which often proved to be a powerful teaching method. One statement he made again and again was a humble, matter-of-fact, “I can change.”
If someone expressed frustration with Dr. Coven, he said it without the least bit of defensiveness. If he was speaking about a change he wanted to make in himself he affirmatively stated, “I can change,” as if recalling some profound and powerful truth.
Dr. Coven’s words stayed with me both for what he said and how he said it. He sounded entirely different than the stuck or stubborn people I’ve heard say, “This is just the way I am,” and “I’ll never change.”
I love the positivism, hope and humility of this simple three-word sentence and I have come to believe 100% in the power and truth of these words. I have seen people turn their lives completely around, and in every case, without exception, they were able to transform their lives because they believed they could change and then they took action to make it happen.
The truth is, we can change. No matter where we’ve come from or what we’ve done, we can change!
